Roscosmos
This topic page brings together every mission in the TRACKER-1 catalog in which the Roscosmos agency participates. Here you will find spacecraft, discoveries, associated scientists and documented impact.
Roscosmos in its current form (state corporation) was created in 2015 by merging the Russian Federal Space Agency and the United Rocket and Space Corporation. The original Russian space agency was created in 1992 after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, which inherited the vast Soviet space program (first satellite, first human in space, first woman, first spacewalk). Roscosmos designs launchers (Soyuz, Angara, Proton), operates crewed flight (Soyuz spacecraft, Russian ISS segment) and robotic exploration (Luna, planned Venera-D).
Roscosmos is funded by the Russian state budget. Its annual budget (≈ 92 billion rubles in 2024, about €0.9 billion) has dropped sharply since the fall of the USSR and suffers from inflation and sanctions. Leasing the Baikonur base from Kazakhstan is a significant expense.
Inheritor of the Soviet program (Sputnik 1957, Yuri Gagarin 1961), Roscosmos operates the Russian segment of the ISS and the Soyuz spacecraft, long the only crewed transport to the ISS before SpaceX's Crew Dragon. Russia has had notable failures (loss of Luna-25 in 2023) but remains a historic player. After the war in Ukraine (2022), cooperation with ESA was greatly reduced and Roscosmos signed an agreement with CNSA to build a lunar station (ILRS).
